This series is based on childhood memories of observing the world through a
car window. Hitting emotionally somewhere between a sad song and a happy
childhood memory, these small quilted pieces explore constructs of consumption
on the landscape. This particular piece features hand stitched wind turbines. I
can still remember the awe of seeing wind turbines for the first time- the
elegance, scale, and hope of moving away from fossil fuels. Materials include
repurposed clothing, scraps from other quilters, and upholstery remnants. The
papier-mâché frames contain recycled paper coated in acrylic medium. The main
techniques are hand embroidery, reverse appliqué, hand dyeing, and machine
stitching.
