Hands Across the Sea Samplers ~ Emma & Martin Noah Hubbard ~ Cross Stitch
Pattern ~ Cross Stitch Sampler
We were so pleased to find a pair of samplers stitched by a brother and
sister. The icing on the cake was the additional discovery of the Hubbards’
family history and that the samplers came from Norfolk.
The dates on the two samplers are the date of birth for Emma and Martin; Emma
having been born on July 26, 1869 and Martin on October 16, 1870. The samplers
were stitched in the year 1880 when Emma was 11 years and Martin 10 years old.
The samplers are, at first glance, almost identical; however, as you study
them, there are differences.
Emma and Martin’s parents were Noah Eli Hubbard, a master mariner, and his
wife Emma Christiana (née Callow). The family lived in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.
It is amazing that two such small samplers have survived and that they have
been kept together. We presume that Emma as the only surviving sibling was the
custodian of the two small samplers before they were passed down into the care
of one of her sons. The two sentiments Emma and Martin stitched seem so apt!
Emma and Martin’s samplers have been reproduced using a palette of 2 colours
with Soie 100.3 from Au Ver à Soie. We have provided conversions for Soie
d’Alger and DMC.
You will only require one spool or skein of each colour for stitching either
or both samplers on 36 to 56ct. When working with two strands on 28ct you will
require two skeins of each colour when working both samplers.
