I have rescued and salvaged this primitive quilt piece from a very old
tattered and torn quilt. Some of the fabrics are now very thin and fragile and
thread bare in some areas, tattered and worn, there are a few spots and stains,
there are repairs and places where the natural burlap filler that was used, now
shows through, seams have pulled apart in some places, a hanging knotted thread
and holes. It is very primitive. All hand-stitched, hand-pieced and
hand-quilted. It is a testament to America's quilt history and is a piece of
the past to cherish and display. Collectible Americana textile fiber art.
When times were tough and materials were scarce and hard to come by, quilters
sometimes used burlap or whatever they had on hand as the middle quilt layer to
make their quilts to help keep them warm. This quilt had two layers of burlap
which were created from what was known as tow sacks, toe sacks, gunnysacks,
gunny shoes, potato sacks or more commonly known today as burlap bags - large
sacks made from loosely woven, coarse material formed from jute, hemp, or other
natural fibers. Not many of these burlap-filled quilts are still around today.
This quilt piece is approx. 120 to 140 years old and from my textile background
and research, was probably made in the South, late 1800's, post Civil War time
frame, when many of the southern people had lost them homes and everything
during the war, and materials were scarce and they were trying to rebuild their
lives. I acquired this old quilt in the southeastern part of Oklahoma (which
was Indian Territory at that time).
I have gently hand-soaked, washed and air dried this quilt piece to prepare it
for framing. There are still some light spots and stains that did not come out,
but they add charm and beauty to this old patchwork textile piece of the past.
I hand embroidered the words "circa 1890" in black, the approximate time this
quilt was made.
I have mounted and framed this old antique quilt piece into a pine wood frame.
There is no glass, so there is no reflection. It is finished on the back with a
piece of cardboard.
It can be hung on the wall square or on point diagonally, or it will stand by
itself on the edge. You will need to add the hardware for hanging.
I have preserved a piece of the past for you to enjoy today.
